2024 Annie Awards to Recognize Animation Excellence, Support Fire-Affected Community

ASIFA-Hollywood, the organization that hosts the 52nd annual Annie Awards, faced a difficult decision. With the destructive fires that hit Los Angeles in early January, they had to consider whether to postpone or downsize the event. Many in the animation community were severely affected by these events.

ASIFA-Hollywood Executive Director Aubry Mintz stated, “We represent the animation community, and their support is our utmost priority, especially during these times.” After much deliberation, it was decided that the show would proceed, albeit with a more solemn atmosphere. The event would also include the announcement of initiatives to gather resources and provide aid for those in the community facing numerous losses.

The board discussed the implications of continuing with the Annies as planned or delaying it. Mintz stated that the majority believed that people needed to feel a sense of community more than anything else. It was, therefore, crucial to continue with the show despite a shift in tone. The event would now have a more supportive feel.

One significant way the event would offer support is through a fundraising venture to be announced during the Annies. Mintz shared, “We continue to learn about our colleagues who have been evacuated and those who have lost their homes. We’re delighted to announce a fundraising initiative that will reach far into our community. Our goal is to provide much-needed financial aid to those who have lost so much. The animation community is strong and close-knit, and we will unite to support each other during these challenging times.”

ASIFA-Hollywood is partnering with an unnamed group of industry executives, producers, and artists to raise and distribute funds. This group was formed in response to the fires impacting and devastating the animation community. Mintz explained that both groups are working together on the specifics and parameters. ASIFA will be the nonprofit to which people can donate, and the other group will facilitate the distribution of the funds.

The ASIFA team had to consider a possible venue change for the show due to the fires. At one point, one of the fires resulted in an evacuation warning for Royce Hall, located on the UCLA campus. Show producer and ASIFA Vice President Frank Gladstone pointed out that the community’s feelings and concerns about the venue were taken into account. However, the venue is safe, and preparations for the show are underway.

This year, “Inside Out 2,” “Kung Fu Panda 4,” “That Christmas,” “The Wild Robot,” “Ultraman Rising,” and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” will compete for the best feature trophy. “Chicken for Linda!,” “Flow,” “Kensuke’s Kingdom,” “Look Back,” “Mars Express,” and “Memoir of a Snail” are nominated in the best independent feature category. The Annies nominations recognize all elements of animation, including voice acting.

This year is Mintz’s first as ASIFA-Hollywood’s executive director. He took over from Frank Gladstone, who retired from the position last year but continues to produce the annual awards gala. Mintz expressed gratitude for Gladstone’s guidance and focused on introducing himself to the various studios and companies that support ASIFA’s initiatives beyond the flagship Annies.

Mintz’s meetings have been promising, reminding him of the importance of animation to the community. The Annies will honor achievements across 32 categories, including best animated feature and best feature – independent. “Inside Out 2,” “Kung Fu Panda 4,” “That Christmas,” “The Wild Robot,” “Ultraman: Rising,” and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” are nominees for the best feature. In the best feature – independent category, “Chicken for Linda!,” “Flow,” “Kensuke’s Kingdom,” “Look Back,” “Mars Express,” and “Memoir of a Snail” are contending.

The Annies will take place on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. The pre-event reception will commence at 4:30 p.m., and the awards ceremony will start at 7 p.m.
