OpenAI’s newest model family, GPT-o1, is set to offer improved power and reasoning abilities compared to its predecessors.
Using GPT-o1 differs slightly from prompting GPT-4 or GPT-4o. With enhanced reasoning capabilities, traditional prompt engineering methods may not be as effective. Previous models required more guidance, utilizing longer context windows for providing instructions.
According to OpenAI’s API documentation, the o1 models perform best with simple prompts. Techniques like instructing the model and shot prompting might not boost performance and could even hinder it.
OpenAI recommends considering four things when prompting the new models:
- Keep prompts simple and direct to avoid over-guiding the model
- Avoid chain of thought prompts as o1 models already internalize reasoning
- Use delimiters like triple quotation marks, XML tags, and section titles to provide clarity on interpreted sections
- Limit additional context for retrieval augmented generation (RAG) tasks to prevent complicating responses
OpenAI’s advice for o1 differs significantly from its previous suggestions to users of older models. Instead of being overly specific and detailed, GPTo1 is encouraged to autonomously think through problem-solving queries.
Professor Ethan Mollick from the Wharton School of Business noted in his One Useful Thing blog that o1 works best on tasks requiring planning where the model determines solutions independently.
Prompt engineering and making it easier to guide models
Prompt engineering has become crucial for tailoring responses from AI models. It is not just a skill but a growing job category.
Other AI developers have introduced tools to simplify prompt creation for designing AI applications. Google’s Prompt Poet, developed with Character.ai, integrates external data sources for more relevant responses.
While GPT-o1 is still new, users are experimenting with its capabilities, anticipating a shift in how they approach prompting ChatGPT.
still a working theory, but prompt engineering will be a relic
llm’s wont not need them, as their intelligence increases over time
