During the week from August 26 to September 1, the television series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” secured a second-place spot in Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings. For four days in that timeframe, viewers had the opportunity to stream the first three episodes of Season 2, amounting to an impressive watch time of a billion minutes on the Amazon Prime Video platform.
Nevertheless, this represents a viewership decline from the initial launch of Season 1 in 2022. At that time, viewers collectively spent 1.3 billion minutes watching over a span of just the first two episodes. The total minutes watched would likely have been higher had Season 1 premiered with three episodes, as Season 2 did. Furthermore, this recent billion-minute milestone also includes any playbacks of Season 1 from August 26 to September 1, suggesting that viewers might have been revisiting or discovering earlier episodes for the first time during that week.

It’s worth noting that Nielsen only tracks viewership information for the U.S. However, Amazon consistently maintains that “The Rings of Power” garners considerable popularity in foreign countries, although the company has yet to back this assertion with substantiating data.

The only program to outperform “The Rings of Power” in this viewing window was “Prison Break.” Since its recent addition to Netflix, the completed Fox drama series has experienced a resurgence in popularity, enabling it to secure the top spot for four consecutive weeks. This round, viewers spent 1.2 billion minutes watching “Prison Break” on both Netflix and Hulu.
