Joker: Folie a Deux star Joaquin Phoenix found inspiration in an unexpected source as he prepared to step back into his role as the iconic supervillain: Kiss.
The sequel to the hit 2019 film Joker features Phoenix reprising his role as the Joker (formerly known as Arthur Fleck) and singer/actor Lady Gaga as his love interest, Harley Quinn. Set two years after the events of Joker, Arthur finds himself arrested and awaiting trial for a series of murders at Arkham State Hospital.
Director Todd Phillips and Phoenix aimed to create a unique follow-up to the billion-dollar-grossing Joker, focusing on a twisted love story at the heart of the musical. “We didn’t want to simply continue from the first film with the Joker now out robbing banks,” Phoenix explained to USA Today. “We wanted something different.”
How Did Kiss Influence ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’?
By the time Joker: Folie a Deux unfolds, Arthur is disillusioned with his Joker persona, leading to the Kiss inspiration coming into play.
“Have you ever thought about Gene Simmons from Kiss? Where young people are emulating them, putting on makeup and platform shoes, all rock ‘n’ roll,” Phoenix pondered. “But what happens when you’re older and no longer want to wear the makeup?” This idea sparked a new direction for the character.
Kiss had actually abandoned their signature makeup long before reaching their 40s. The band famously removed their face paint in 1983, only to bring it back in 1996 for a massive reunion tour. Simmons was nearly 47 at the time. Kiss continued touring for over 25 years, culminating in their final show in December 2023, with Simmons at 75 and bandmate Paul Stanley at 71.
Simmons has since moved on to a solo career, declaring that the physical Kiss is officially retired, paving the way for a virtual version of the band. “No more makeup for me,” he stated in March. “But we are incredibly fortunate.”
