Weekly Commentary (Updated Nov. 1, 2024): As November rolls in, the awards season starts to gather momentum, with the announcement of crucial precursors and guild awards nominations. The Golden Globes, set to celebrate its 82nd ceremony this coming January, is among the most eagerly anticipated events of this season.
The submission deadline for film and TV entries is set for Monday, Nov. 4, and the competition is wide open. This year’s race promises a blend of fan-favorites and breakout hits, drawing the biggest names in Hollywood to the fray.
In the film category, the comedy and musical sections are expected to be fiercely contested. Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez,” Neon’s “Anora,” and Universal’s “Wicked” are all expected to be in the running for the top prize. Notably, the lead comedy actor category seems less crowded, with Cannes’ best actor award winner Jesse Plemons leading the pack for his performance in “Kinds of Kindness”. A win here could significantly boost his chances at the Oscars.
In contrast, the drama categories are brimming with talent. The lead actor field boasts heavyweights like Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”), Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”), and Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”). For lead actress, big names such as Angelina Jolie (“Maria”), Tilda Swinton (“The Room Next Door”), and Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”) are expected to secure their nominations. With the expansion to six slots in every category, there’s plenty of room for unexpected twists.
The supporting actress category also features strong contenders, with Selena Gomez (“Emilia Pérez”), Ariana Grande (“Wicked”), and Jennifer Lopez (“Unstoppable”) potentially sweeping the entire category. Even with underwhelming reviews and box office numbers for “Joker 2,” Lady Gaga could still secure a nomination for her acting or the original song “Folie à Deux.”
The supporting actor category is similarly stacked, featuring Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”) and Denzel Washington (“Gladiator II”), who may find themselves in a season-long showdown. Globe voters, known for their occasional wildcard picks, could opt for someone like Josh O’Connor from “Challengers,” possibly alongside co-star Zendaya in the lead actress category and their film in best picture (comedy).
On the TV front, recent Emmy winners like FX’s “Shogun,” HBO/Max’s “Hacks” and Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” are looking solid for nominations. However, new releases have a special place in the hearts of Globe voters. Netflix’s miniseries “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” NBC’s upcoming mockumentary “St. Denis Medical,” and Apple’s summer hit “Presumed Innocent” may also make a splash in various categories. Furthermore, returning favorites and familiar IPs like Netflix’s “Squid Game,” Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” and HBO/Max’s “The Penguin,” featuring Colin Farrell, are sure to leave their mark.
In addition, this year marks the second installation of the cinematic box office achievement and stand-up comedy categories. Movies like “Inside Out 2,” now the highest-grossing animated film of all time, and comedians like Adam Sandler, and even Globes host Nikki Glaser, will be hoping for a mention.
The new membership of the Golden Globes has resulted in improved quality and diversity of choices. In 2020, the Globes faced criticism over diversity, transparency, and ethical practices within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Since then, the organization has initiated a comprehensive reform process to promote inclusivity, accountability, and transparency. Last year’s ceremony attracted roughly 10 million viewers across all platforms with seven days of delayed viewing, marking the largest audience since 2020, according to Nielsen.
