James Awad, also known as James Tonic, is a prominent figure in Quebec’s music scene, deeply connected to the cultural landscape. As a first-generation Lebanese Canadian, James has carved out a distinct niche for himself in the industry.
Unlike many artists who draw inspiration from their ethnic backgrounds, James’ music is not defined by his Lebanese heritage but by his strong ties to Canadian French roots. This connection shines through in his genre-blending sound, encompassing elements of alternative hip-hop, folk rock, and pop rock.
James’ creative journey is more about exploring and celebrating Quebec’s musical heritage than focusing on his Lebanese roots. “Quebec is my home, where I grew up and where my cultural foundation lies,” he explains.Â
“My music is a reflection of my life here and the rich French culture that surrounds me.”Â
His commitment to his roots is evident in his choice to predominantly sing in French, resonating deeply with Quebec’s Francophone audience and paying homage to the traditions that have shaped him.
“I was exposed to the beautiful sounds of Lebanon growing up—maqam scales, darbuka beats, oud melodies,” James recalls.Â
“While I blend these influences with Western pop and the storytelling of French chanson, they are not the focal point. They serve as an inspiration.
“I’ve always felt torn between two worlds,” James reflects. “Music has been my way of exploring my sense of belonging, connecting to my roots while finding my place here. Each song tells a piece of that story.”
His latest album, “No Sorrow” (2023), exemplifies his dedication to this heritage, with lyrics and themes deeply resonating within Quebec’s cultural narrative. Tracks like “Looking At Me” and “Day Off,” featuring collaborations with artists like NAV, delve into the introspective nature of French chanson, capturing the essence of Quebec’s cultural identity.Â
“Collaborating with artists from diverse genres, such as NAV and Gunna, allows me to expand my sound,” James explains.Â
“It’s about blending influences to create something fresh and unexpected, rooted in our identities. I touch on universal themes like love, resilience, and hope,” he adds.Â
While James is multilingual, he opts to sing primarily in French as a nod to his upbringing and the Francophone community he resonates with. “Singing in French is not just a choice; it’s a part of me,” he emphasizes.Â
His bilingualism allows him to connect with a diverse audience, yet French remains his preferred mode of expression, offering a level of authenticity that English or Arabic cannot replicate.Â
By performing in French, he finds a unique way to share his story while honoring the cultural significance of the Quebecois dialect.
Despite his Lebanese heritage, James’ music focuses on his Canadian upbringing, devoid of overt Middle Eastern influences.Â
He is resolute in keeping his work anchored in the environment he knows best: “I’ve never felt compelled to incorporate Lebanese elements into my music,” he asserts, “as my heart and mind are firmly rooted in Quebec. The landscape, the people, and the unique culture inspire me.”Â
James’ narrative embodies a dual identity, acknowledging his Lebanese roots without intertwining them into his music, reflecting his experiences as a Quebecois artist.
His focus on Canadian French traditions allows him to make a distinctive contribution, enriching the cultural tapestry with his unique voice: “I see my role as a continuation of that legacy.
“If my success can inspire other immigrants and minority groups to embrace their heritage and pursue their passions without compromising their identity, then I believe I am making a difference.”Â
Drummer Records, the label backing his recent projects, acknowledges this uniqueness, working to amplify James’ voice not as a multicultural figure but as a Quebecois artist.
While his roots may be intricate, James’ work transcends boundaries, resonating with themes of love, loss, and introspection in a manner that appeals to both local and international audiences.Â
His “Stuck In LA Tour” spans various cities, bringing Quebec’s cultural richness to new listeners. “Music has the power to travel, but for me, it always returns home,” he affirms.
Through his dedication to Canadian French music, James delivers an artistic expression rooted in his experiences. His voice, lyrics, and style are not a fusion of cultures but a celebration of the one he knows best, resonating as an authentic tribute.
“My aim is to create a space where people can encounter something unique—a fusion of cultures and sounds that feels fresh,” James expresses.Â
“Embracing diversity is integral to my mission. I strive to spotlight the Lebanese immigrant community in Canada, showcasing the value of multiculturalism and diverse cultural contributions to society.
“When young artists join me on stage, I see the next generation emerging. Witnessing them find their voice is truly inspiring.”
James’ journey exemplifies embracing one’s primary cultural setting and sharing it with the world, establishing him as a notable figure in Canada’s Francophone artistic realm.
