Björk has announced a new immersive sound installation, ‘Natural Manifesto’, where she will recreate the calls of extinct animals using AI software and merge them with spoken word vocals. The installation will be featured at Paris’ Centre Pompidou from November 20 to December 9.
Collaboration and Support
The piece, created in collaboration with French artist Aleph, has been supported by sound research institute IRCAM and curated by Chloé Siganos and Delphine Le Gatt, along with environmentalists from France and Iceland.
Artist Statement
In an Instagram post, Björk explained the concept behind the installation, stating, “This immersive sound piece gives endangered and extinct animals a voice by merging their sounds with our words. We wanted to share their presence in architecture representing the industrial age, far away from nature.”
She added, “In the veins of the escalator of the museum, known as the ‘caterpillar’, we wanted to remind citizens of the raw vitality of endangered creatures.”
Event Details
‘Natural Manifesto’ will be part of the Biodiversity: Which culture for which future? forum from November 20 to 24 at the Centre Pompidou. The event aims to raise awareness of the threats facing life on Earth and renew collective imagination to address the impending crisis.
Previous Initiatives
Björk has previously addressed issues related to the climate crisis during her ‘Cornucopia’ tour, where she presented a self-directed feature on the topic. Additionally, she will release a 480-page book documenting the tour on November 15.
