When Batman isn’t present in any DC production, the question that always arises is, “Where’s Batman?” This iconic line from “The Simpsons” became a prediction for numerous fans during the viewing of “The Penguin,” a spin-off series from Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.” The main reason being, the show never featured Robert Pattinson’s Batman. Nevertheless, anticipation has been building for a unique introduction of Batman in the DC Universe, which James Gunn is meticulously developing. The famous masked crusader is expected to hit the screens soon.

Surprisingly, Batman made his entrance sooner than anticipated and through a different platform – HBO’s “Creature Commandos,” an animated sequel to 2021’s “The Suicide Squad.” The latest episode provided viewers with a pleasant surprise, despite its primary focus on DC villains, led by the adorable Weasel and his group of rebels. The creative team behind the show managed to hint at the larger universe surrounding these characters, and in doing so, provided the first official glimpse of the new DC Universe Batman. Episode 6, titled “Priyatel Skelet,” showcased a series of flashbacks on how the scientist Alexander Sartorius evolved into the radioactive Doctor Phosphorus. The episode ends with Batman capturing the villain, marking his first appearance.

According to Gunn, this cameo was a decision he made carefully.

Let’s see a show of hands: how many expected James Gunn’s Batman to debut in “Creature Commandos”? While it would have been logical to anticipate his cameo in the upcoming “Superman” film or the “The Brave and the Bold” movie, Batman made a surprise appearance in the animated HBO series. Gunn and Dean Lorey, the showrunner/executive producer of “Creature Commandos,” explained their reasoning behind this decision in a video published by Rotten Tomatoes.

Confirming the first glimpse of the DCU Batman, Gunn explained how the scene was significantly shortened from its original concept. He said, “When they first gave [the episode] to me, we saw a lot more Batman. And I was saying, ‘I am not ready to commit to that.’ So I just went like, ‘More silhouette, more silhouette, more silhouette.’ It’s a great way to show that Batman does exist, he already exists in this universe. We don’t need to hear the [Batman] origin story again. That’s just a way to introduce that Batman is a part of this universe, he’s an important part of this universe, and he has an impact on it.”

While many may be disappointed at the absence of another dramatic origin story for Batman, we can only trust that Gunn knows what he’s doing. As we await updates on “The Brave and the Bold,” “Superman” is set to hit the theaters on July 11, 2025.
