The Sandman’s Final Season Announced by Netflix
The Sandman’s time has nearly run out.
Netflix Reveals the End of The Sandman
The upcoming second season of the fantasy series will be its last, Netflix announced Friday. “Dream’s journey has all been building to this,” the streamer said in a social media post. “The story of The Sandman comes to its epic conclusion in 2025.”
Showrunner Allan Heinberg added, “The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”
Sexual Assault Allegations Against Neil Gaiman
The news comes in the wake of multiple sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman, the best-selling writer who penned the show’s comic book source material and developed the Netflix adaptation. Multiple women accused Gaiman of sexual misconduct in an explosive New York magazine article published earlier this month.
Gaiman denied the allegations in a post on his personal website. “As I read through this latest collection of accounts, there are moments I half-recognize and moments I don’t, descriptions of things that happened sitting beside things that emphatically did not happen,” he wrote. “I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.”
The Sandman’s First Season and Cast
Premiering in 2022, the first season of The Sandman starred Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, a.k.a. Dream, a cosmic being who oversees the domain of dreams. The show also starred Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, and Patton Oswalt, and featured appearances from David Thewlis, Jenna Coleman, Gwendoline Christie, Sandra Oh, and Mark Hamill.
Gaiman’s Tease for Season 2 and Good Omens Finale
Gaiman previously teased the second season after the show was renewed. “We have things coming for you in season 2,” Gaiman said in a video. “We have more members of the Endless coming, including the youngest member of the Endless. Don’t tell anybody, but it’s Delirium! There will be butterflies, there will be balloons, there will be magic, there will be chicken and telephone flavored ice cream.”
In October, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that another Gaiman project, Good Omens, would end with a single 90-minute episode instead of a full third season. Gaiman contributed to the writing of the finale but was not involved in production. The show, which stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant, is an adaptation of the 1990 novel co-written by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.
Dark Horse Comics Cuts Ties
Following the New York article, Dark Horse Comics — which published several Gaiman titles, including a recent Anansi Boys comic — announced that it had cut ties with the author as a result of the allegations. Gaiman wrote two episodes of an Anansi Boys TV adaptation for Amazon Prime Video, which he said had completed filming in 2022. However, no release date has been announced for the project.
