Irv Gotti Passes Away
Famed record executive and producer Irv Gotti died on Wednesday (Feb. 5), according to The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of his death is currently unknown, and he passed away in New York City, as reported by TMZ.
Earlier today, AllHipHop published an article revealing that Irv had suffered from a stroke several days ago, marking the second stroke he experienced in about a year.
Last year, Wack 100 broke the news of Irv Gotti’s stroke and shared a photo of him using a walker. Following this, his team released a statement addressing his health issues, stating that he had been struggling with diabetes for years, which led to a minor stroke over six months ago. However, he had since made a full recovery by changing his diet to healthier options and was enjoying life with his family at home.
During an interview on Drink Champs in 2023, Irv spoke about his diabetes complications, emphasizing how it affects the body, particularly among Black people. When asked if he had his diabetes under control, he humorously replied, “No,” attributing it to being a hereditary condition.
Irv Gotti’s Hip-Hop Legacy
Irv Gotti made a significant impact in hip-hop as an A&R at Def Jam Recordings, where he signed DMX in 1997. He played a crucial role in promoting Jay-Z’s early records like “Ain’t No Ni**a” to Funkmaster Flex on Hot 97, contributing to Hov’s success. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, he worked with artists like Ja Rule and Ashanti, producing hit tracks such as Ja’s “Always on Time,” Jay-Z’s “Can I Get A…,” DMX’s “What’s My Name,” and Eve’s “Gangsta Lovin’,” among others.
In 2003, Irv faced legal issues when the Murder Inc. Records headquarters were raided by the FBI due to connections with drug lord Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff. Despite being charged with money laundering and conspiracy, Irv and his brother Chris Gotti were acquitted of all charges after a trial in 2005.
