The EE BAFTA Film Awards took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London, with David Tennant returning as the host for the evening.
During his monologue, Tennant entertained the audience with jokes about Trump, celebrity gags, and even had some stars singing The Proclaimers’ hit “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).” However, there was no cameo from Peter Mullan, which may have disappointed fans of the Empire Podcast.
Tennant humorously warned the audience that there would be no intermission like in the nominated film The Brutalist, and advised winners to keep their speeches short and sweet, contrasting them with their films.
A surprise performance of Take That’s “Greatest Day” added to the night’s entertainment, with the band’s presence on the soundtracks of Better Man and Anora likely contributing to the decision.
Among the winners, Conclave had a successful night, taking home awards for Best Film, Best British Film, Editing, and another Adapted Screenplay trophy for writer Peter Straughan. A Real Pain also received recognition, winning Original Screenplay for writer/director/star Jesse Eisenberg and another Supporting Acting award for Kieran Culkin.
Despite social media controversy surrounding lead actress Karla SofÃa Gascón from Emilia Pérez (who was absent), the film still managed to secure awards, including Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Film Not In The English Language. Director Jacques Audiard acknowledged Gascón and the rest of the cast in his acceptance speech.
Technical awards were dominated by Wicked, while Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl triumphed in the Family Film and Animated Film categories.
