While “Deadpool & Wolverine” has been the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s saving grace at the box office this year, Kathryn Hahn’s cunning Agatha Harkness and her band of witches have been the unsung heroes in streamlining Marvel Television with “Agatha All Along.” This unexpected spinoff from “WandaVision” was a gamble, given its origin from Marvel TV’s previously flawed production process. However, much to everyone’s surprise, Jac Schaeffer’s spinoff turned out to be a delightful, spooky, and thoroughly enjoyable ride, full of unexpected twists and turns. The visual appeal of “Agatha All Along” is unmatched in recent MCU entries, thanks to the vibrant set pieces and costumes that bring to life the supernatural trials faced by Agatha and her band of witches on their perilous journey down the Witches’ Road. The show’s cost-effective, practical-driven approach is a breath of fresh air, especially after several MCU Disney+ series seemed to overcompensate their massive CGI budgets by filming the rest of their scenes in nondescript European parking lots. To give you an idea, “Secret Invasion” was primarily shot in an abandoned Shredded Wheat factory in England.
Both “Agatha All Along” and “Echo,” this year’s only other live-action MCU Disney+ release, have benefited from being less expensive to produce, resulting in more creative freedom than previous Marvel titles. As studios are trying to control their budgets amidst the cooling streaming wars, “Agatha,” in particular, will set the course for future Marvel Disney+ offerings.
Reduced costs will provide more creative freedom to Marvel’s Disney+ series

Who’s the culprit behind the budget overruns? It’s been over-spending all along! The initial plan to budget MCU’s Disney+ shows at par with its films seemed attractive when Disney was trying to compete with Netflix for streaming supremacy. However, in reality, it turned out to be an expensive mistake. Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming, television, and animation for Marvel Studios, revealed in a Variety interview that this is a practice they won’t be following anymore, starting with “Agatha All Along,” which is “our least expensive show, and I think that was by design.”
For reference, “Echo” was previously the least-expensive MCU Disney+ show, costing $40 million for five episodes, while “Agatha” will have a total of nine episodes. Winderbaum further highlighted the creative advantages of this budget-conscious approach for future projects:
“We aim to produce these shows at a responsible cost. It provides us more creative freedom when we can keep the budget reasonable. Like ‘Agatha All Along,’ for instance, the show has minimal CGI, far less than we’ve ever used before. It’s mostly practical effects, and I think that’s evident in the show.”
“Agatha All Along,” with its emphasis on practical effects, stands out aesthetically from previous MCU releases, especially in its fantastical elements. The series seems to have more creative leeway than other Marvel titles, from a humorous nude scene in the premiere to the subtly sensual interactions between Agatha and her old friend Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza) in the first four episodes. Whether the series will fulfill its promise of being the most queer-friendly Marvel production is yet to be seen. Hopefully, “Agatha All Along” will be the first step towards a more innovative, exciting future for Marvel Television.
