While Alcatraz has transitioned from a prison to a museum, it holds a legendary status in popular culture as an unbreakable fortress. However, its reputation was challenged when three prisoners escaped in 1962, a year before its closure.
The escapees were Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, John and Clarence, who attempted to row towards freedom. Another prisoner, Allen West, was involved in the plan but failed to escape his cell on time. Authorities believe the trio never made it to land and drowned, due to the absence of their bodies. However, the new comic “Out Of Alcatraz” by Christopher Cantwell and Tyler Crook explores the possibility of the prisoners reaching land. Oni Press has provided /Film (via Superfan Promo) with an exclusive preview of “Out of Alcatraz” #1, including three unseen pages.
Cantwell, known for co-creating the TV show “Halt and Catch Fire,” has also had a successful career in comic writing. His work includes a 10-issue “Doctor Doom” solo series at Marvel and “Briar,” a dark fantasy reimagining of “Sleeping Beauty” at Boom! Studios. Tyler Crook, known for his work on horror comics, rose to fame with the “Hellboy” spin-off “B.P.R.D.” His dark and haunting illustrations perfectly complement “Out of Alcatraz.”
Crook’s cover for “Out of Alcatraz” #1 is a masterpiece, combining detailed illustrations and minimal graphics. The orange and black color scheme and shadowy figures are reminiscent of Saul Bass’ iconic posters for “Vertigo” and “Anatomy of a Murder.”

The notorious 1962 escape from Alcatraz was dramatized in Clint Eastwood’s 1979 film “Escape From Alcatraz.” However, “Out of Alcatraz” goes beyond the escape and delves into the aftermath. Crook considers the comic akin to a classic ’60s crime/road movie.

The initial pages of “Out of Alcatraz” #1 depict the escape. The first page starts with a panoramic view of the prison island, gradually showing the turbulent ocean waves. The narration recounts the historical facts, ending with a close-up of Frank swimming.
In the version by Cantwell and Crook, one of the prisoners, John Anglin, drowns during the escape. Despite Clarence’s attempt to save his brother, Frank pulls him to shore, where they find no time for grief.

Once they reach dry land, they head to Modesto, where they meet a woman who will help them cross the border to Canada. Cantwell describes her as an essential character who adds a layer of complexity to the story.
In the first issue of “Out of Alcatraz,” the identity of this woman remains a mystery, but she seems to share some history with Frank. In an exclusive preview shared by /Film, Frank and the woman discuss their plans, including the unexpected reduction in the number of escaped prisoners and Clarence’s worthiness.
While the actual fate of Frank Morris and Clarence Anglin remains a mystery, “Out of Alcatraz” provides an intriguing theory.
The first issue of “Out of Alcatraz” is set to be published in print and digital formats on March 19, 2025.
