Anderson’s early singing career included a prominent role in Cannonball Adderley’s Big Man (1976) at Carnegie Hall and a role in the Lincoln Center’s Children of the Fire scored by trumpeter “Hannibal” Marvin Peterson. She also lent her vocals to the Quincy Jones-produced soundtrack of The Wiz in 1978.

Luther Vandross played a key role in Anderson joining Chic in 1977. She provided backing vocals on their hit “Everybody Dance” and appeared on “Dance Dance Dance” from the band’s debut album.

Becoming co-lead vocalist with Luci Martin after Norma Jean Wright’s departure, Anderson performed with Chic from 1978 to 1983. Their second album featured two of Anderson’s solos, including “At Last I Am Free” and “I Want Your Love,” as well as the hit “Le Freak,” which she sang with Diva Gray. The band’s Risque album in 1979 included the Anderson-led hit “Good Times.”

Aside from her work with Chic, Anderson contributed vocals to Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” and Diana Ross’ Diana, among other projects.

After Chic disbanded in 1983, Anderson collaborated with various artists, including Bryan Adams, Gregory Hines, Mick Jagger, and more. She also rejoined Vandross’s touring band from 1982 to 1987.

Chic’s “Le Freak” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015, with Anderson’s version added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry in 2018.

Reflecting on Chic’s timeless appeal, Anderson emphasized the universal spirit and enduring quality of their music, which continues to inspire people to dance and enjoy classic tunes.
