Acclaimed actress Angela Bassett continues to shine, nearly four decades into her illustrious career. She recently celebrated her first Emmy Award win.
During the Creative Arts Emmys held on Saturday, September 7, Bassett was recognized for her exceptional narration in National Geographic’s nature documentary, Queens. The veteran actress shared her thoughts on this honor with the press backstage.
“These awards are not what we work for, but they are a recognition of our hard work,” Bassett explained. “It’s not a solo effort, especially with narration. I had a dedicated team that supported and believed in me, advocated for me, and worked with me to narrate this incredible tale of female creatures in the wild. The production was led by an all-female team, a first in wildlife documentary filmmaking, which was inspiring in itself.”

When questioned about her decision to take on this project, Bassett mentioned her stint on the FX series 9-1-1. She accepted the narrator role during the series’ off-season.
“After a grueling season of chasing criminals and playing a cop, I was exhausted. The concept of an all-female crew narrating a story in the wilderness, focusing on matriarchs and their conservation efforts, resonated with me deeply.”
She also expressed her astonishment at winning one of the major awards, stating, “This is one of the big ones, which is not a common occurrence. Any recognition is always humbling. I’m just a girl who dreamt of acting. My mentors paved the way for me. I drew inspiration and hope from them and devoted my attention, energy, and love to make it a reality in my life.”
In addition to her Emmy, Bassett was also honored with an honorary Oscar in January 2024.
