Global television’s best were recognized and celebrated at the International Emmy Awards 2024 in New York on Monday evening. Nominees were chosen from a diverse range of 21 countries, reflecting the global nature of the event.
The main highlights of the event were the triumphs of Drops of God for best drama series, Timothy Spall for best actor, Aokbab-Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying for best actress, División Palermo for best comedy, and Liebes Kind for best miniseries.
In the fiercely contested drama category, the manga adaptation Drops of God from Apple TV+ emerged victorious. This French-American-Japanese production faced stiff competition from The Newsreader, a 1980s Australian series; Yosi, the Regretful Spy, an Argentine spy thriller from Amazon Prime Video; and The Night Manager, an Indian version of the 2016 BBC show, available on Disney+/Hotstar.
Prominent British actor Timothy Spall was the most anticipated nominee in the best actor category for his role in BBC’s true-crime narrative The Sixth Commandment. His victory added another feather to his cap, complementing his BAFTA TV award for his portrayal of Peter Farquhar in the series. His fellow nominees included Brazilian star Julio Andrade for Living on a Razor’s Edge, Laurent Lafitte for the French Netflix show Class Act, and Haluk Bilginer for Turkish crime drama Sahsiyet.
Aokbab-Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying bagged the best actress award for her performance in the Thai Netflix original drama Hunger. She was pitted against Jessica Hynes from the BBC dramedy There She Goes, Sara Giraudeau from the French Disney+ series Tout va bien, and Adriana Barraza from Netflix’s Mexican drama El Último Vagón.
The comedy category saw Argentina’s División Palermo clinching the award. The Netflix-distributed comedy series revolves around a group of social minorities who establish a neighborhood protection guard. Other nominees in the category were Australia’s Deadloch, South Korea’s Daily Dose of Sunshine, and France’s HPI.
The 2023 International Emmy winner and Indian stand-up comedian and actor Vir Das graced the event as the host. Currently on his international Mind Fool tour, Das added a touch of Bollywood glamour to the awards.
Notable presenters at the ceremony included Lupin star Omar Sy, Picket Fences and Chicago Hope producer Michael Pressman, and actress Jane Seymour. Sy had the honor of presenting the International Emmy Directorate Award to Sidonie Dumas, CEO of French TV powerhouse Gaumont. Meanwhile, seasoned Hollywood showrunner David E. Kelley received his International Emmy Founders Award from Pressman, who co-produces Kelley’s shows.
