Netflix’s “Arcane” was born out of the inspirations drawn from the polarizing U.S. two-party political system and their communication breakdown, as confessed by the show’s creator, Christian Linke.
The plot of “Arcane” unfolds in two distinct cities: the utopian Piltover and the underworld city of Zaun that lies beneath it. The story revolves around the residents of Zaun who survive on the leftovers of the affluent Piltover citizens and are oppressed by a robust police force. As the narrative progresses towards bridging this divide through peaceful settlements between the two cities, it culminates in an all-out war, a sneak peek into what lies ahead in the second season.
When quizzed about the inspiration behind the series during the premiere of its second season in Los Angeles, Linke responded affirmatively to the parallels drawn between the show’s storyline and the real-life political scenario where two parties can’t even hold a conversation.

Linke further explained how the situation worsened with the election, emphasizing that the inability to co-exist, which was already prevalent, only escalated. He drew a parallel between the series and the real world, suggesting that the show in some ways mirrors reality.

Echoing similar thoughts, writer Amanda Overton also confessed to taking inspiration from current issues, specifically the increasing wealth gap. She expressed her team’s desire to encapsulate this issue in a creative and engaging manner.
The animated series, inspired by the popular game League of Legends, had its premiere on Netflix in 2021 and quickly climbed the ranks to become the number one show in 52 countries. The second and final season, divided into three parts, is set to premiere on Nov. 9, with the following parts releasing on Nov. 16 and 23.
