The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is set to resurrect a villain from its past. Ultron, famously known from “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” will be transitioning from the cinema to the small screen in the upcoming Vision TV series. The series will feature Paul Bettany’s sentient robot, Vision, who was first introduced in “Age of Ultron.” The two robotic characters previously battled for the world’s fate and are set to cross paths once more.
Although specific details are scarce, it was revealed earlier this year that Terry Matalas, known for “Star Trek: Picard,” was appointed as the showrunner for the Vision series. The series was initially announced in 2022, following the success of “WandaVision,” the first live-action MCU show commissioned for Disney+. Despite a lack of updates in the initial years, the project is well underway, serving as a platform for Ultron’s grand return. James Spader is also reported to reprise his role as Ultron, a character that contributed to a box office success of $1.4 billion.
The series was initially titled “Vision Quest,” but it is unclear whether this title remains. The conclusion of the “WandaVision” series left fans with an altered version of the familiar Vision. Vision’s brutal death at the hands of Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War” set the stage for Wanda’s violent and chaotic journey. The role of Ultron in this narrative remains the big mystery.
How can Ultron make his way back to the MCU?

As a refresher, Wanda ripped Ultron’s heart from his body at the end of “Age of Ultron,” seeking revenge for Quicksilver’s death. We later see Vision and Ultron, the latter using a drone body, engage in a philosophical discussion before Vision finishes him off. Since then, Ultron has been largely absent from the MCU, except for an appearance in the animated series “What If…?”
The question remains, how could the original Ultron be brought back? Marvel Comics often resurrects characters who were previously dead. Vision, despite being brutally killed, is alive in some form. The series could potentially adapt a storyline from “Avengers” #66 – #68 from 1969, where Ultron returns after Vision is manipulated into creating him a new Adamantium body. This story could be loosely adapted, as is often done with Marvel Comics storylines in the MCU.
Regardless, the comics could provide a feasible route for Ultron’s return. Bettany, in a 2022 interview, hinted that his return as Vision was imminent:
“At the end of ‘WandaVision,’ you see Vision fly off and that’s a loose end. And Kevin Feige (president of Marvel Studios) is a man who doesn’t really allow loose ends. So I assume at some point I will be putting on my tights and cloak for another outing.”
The yet-to-be-titled Vision series is slated to premiere sometime in 2026.
