Black Myth: Wukong’s Massive Success
Game Science announced today that its recently launched Soulslike RPG Black Myth: Wukong has already sold 10 million units across all platforms, just three days after its August 20 release. With one of Steam’s highest concurrent player counts ever, the game is also driving significant sales of PlayStation 5 consoles in China.
Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad stated, “This makes Black Myth: Wukong one of the fastest-selling games of all time, surpassing Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy in the same timeframe.” The game’s success in China can be attributed to its deep roots in Chinese mythology and the classic novel “Journey to the West,” featuring the iconic protagonist Sun Wukong. The game’s graphics, gameplay, and cultural connections have resonated strongly with Chinese gamers.
Black Myth: Wukong has set records in terms of player count, ranking as the most-played single-player title in Steam’s history, second only to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. This success has also led to a surge in PS5 sales in China, as confirmed by industry experts.
Despite its achievements, Game Science has faced criticism for past sexist remarks from its founders, to which the studio responded with “No comment.” Some players have reported performance issues, prompting Game Science to issue an apology on the game’s Steam page. However, these challenges have not hindered the game’s sales.
