“We didn’t include much improv. The Cajun dialect is very peculiar,” Tatum disclosed to Access Hollywood. Raised in Mississippi and with a father from New Orleans, Tatum grew up around the accent. Despite this, he had never attempted it before. “Cajun has specific little quirks, but we intended it to be kind of incomprehensible. That was the joke.”
Tatum revealed that, “Every now and then, [Ryan would] approach me and say, ‘I don’t want to understand anything you’re about to say in this [take],’ so I would exaggerate the accent. But, occasionally he would need to understand my dialog.”
When “Deadpool & Wolverine” broke box-office records on its opening weekend, Tatum released an emotional social media post about fulfilling his dream of playing Gambit.
“I feared I had lost Gambit forever. But [Reynolds] championed me and Gambit,” he posted with gratitude. “I will probably be indebted to him forever. I cannot imagine how I could ever repay what this has meant to me. I care deeply for you… I am so thankful to be part of this movie. In my opinion, it’s a masterpiece. It’s pure exhilaration. It had me shouting in the cinema.”
In a subsequent Variety interview, Tatum revealed his continued interest in creating a standalone Gambit film, stating, “For the last 10 years, I have been saying how much I want it. It’s now in the hands of Bob Iger and Kevin Feige. I pray to God.”
