A new six-minute montage titled Mask Is Off: Chromakopia collects scenes from the making of Tyler, the Creator‘s Chromakopia album. About two minutes in, you can see him rapping the first verse of “I Hope You Find Your Way Home” a cappella, and of course he’s not wearing the face mask on the album art. It’s also amusing in the next scene seeing him bop along to the verse he just recorded as he does a quality check.

The featurette includes snippets of piano, auditions of drum lines, women singing “Sticky,” and more. Willow, Daniel Caesar, Thundercat, Teezo Touchdown, and others make appearances. At the end, he reaches into a generic plastic Amazon bag and pulls out the mask he sports on the cover. The grin on his face tells the whole story.

Tyler released Chromakopia last month and Rolling Stone gave it a positive review. “As with other superstars of his generation, faced with the shelf life of their own brands, the Tyler of Chromakopia finds him making an effort to deconstruct some of his own narratives,” the review said. “For longtime fans, it’s an exciting proposition, one that opens up a new world of possibilities.”

Although the album came out on a Monday, as opposed to the usual Friday, it was able to top the Billboard 200 albums chart. “I know people think because of the weekend they can listen to stuff and the streams go up … but I think it’s a lot of passive listening at parties or people get the time to go to the gym, so they’re not really listening,” Tyler recently said in a 2023 interview with Nardwuar. “If you put it out during that week, that commute to work or to school, you really have the hour to really dive in.”

In February, Tyler will embark on a North American tour with dates running through July. Lil Yachty will open up most of the dates; Paris Texas will serve as opener. The tour includes multiple dates in Los Angeles and New York.
