Comedian Dave Chappelle revived his renowned “Chappelle’s Show” character, Silky Johnson, known for his infamous hating, during a reenactment of the viral YouTube speed dating show “Pop the Balloon.”
The skit was hosted by ‘SNL’ cast member Ego Nwodim, who impersonated real-life host Arlette Amuli, who introduced several women holding red balloons to a series of potential suitors. Among the men was Silky, who was presented to the women, including rapper GloRilla, who immediately popped her balloon. Chappelle fans might remember that Silky was awarded Player Hater of the Year in 2002 on “Chappelle’s Show” at the Player Hater’s Ball. His acceptance speech? “I hate you. I hate you. I don’t even know you, and I hate your guts. I hope all the bad things in life happen to you and nobody else but you.”
Donnell Rawlings also starred in the sketch as Ashy Larry. He was covered in baby powder, proudly accentuating his persistently dry skin. He was soon faced with a multitude of popped balloons. From 2003-2006, Rawlings played Ashy Larry on the sketch comedy series on Comedy Central, which helped establish Chappelle as a household name.
Conceived by Amuli and Bolia Matundu, “Pop the Balloon” has become notorious for its format, where individual contestants are introduced to a row of potential partners, each with a red balloon. If the participants are not interested in the single candidate, they swiftly pop their balloon and later divulge why they chose not to pursue anything further.
Chappelle is the host for the first episode of the new year. This marks his fourth stint hosting the beloved sketch comedy show. Grammy-nominated rapper GloRilla is making her ‘SNL” debut as the musical guest.
