Dick Van Dyke Backs Kamala Harris with Revived 1964 MLK Jr. Rally Speech

Veteran television star Dick Van Dyke has publicly shown his support for Kamala Harris’s presidential bid by reciting a speech he originally gave at a civil rights gathering in 1964, where he shared the stage with Martin Luther King.

A video labeled “VOTE!! @KamalaHarris,” was uploaded on Monday in which the nonagenarian actor, known for his roles in “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Mary Poppins,” and “Bye Bye Birdie,” recounts the words he delivered, penned by Rod Serling, the creator of “The Twilight Zone,” to an audience of approximately 60,000 at the Coliseum in Los Angeles.

“Hatred, prejudice, suspicion, envy, scapegoating – none of these are inherent traits of human nature. They are diseases. They are the cancers that eat away at the soul,” Van Dyke recited.

He continued, “There will be instances of violence, expressions of hatred, and echoes of intolerance, but these are the remnants of a decaying past, not the signs of a purer, better future. To those who argue that human inequality is a necessary evil, we must reply that it is indeed evil, but not necessary.”

Upon finishing his recitation, Van Dyke reflected, “1964 – a lot has transpired. It’s not quite the realization of Martin Luther King’s dream, but it’s a beginning. Thank you, and God bless.”

During the 2020 presidential primaries, Van Dyke was a vocal supporter of Bernie Sanders and even appeared at one of the senator’s campaign events. Earlier this year, he publically endorsed Joe Biden before the president withdrew from the race.

In a June interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Van Dyke expressed his belief that Donald Trump is “disturbed,” partly because he has “never seen him laugh.”
