Don Omar has endorsed Kamala Harris for president, the Puerto Rican artist announced on his Instagram on Tuesday, writing that Harris “represents the respect and change our communities need, and I believe she can forge a new path forward.”
The endorsement comes days after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s racist comments during Donald Trump‘s New York Rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, where he called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage.”
“Puerto Rico is my land and my identity, and today more than ever I raise the flag of my island with pride,” Omar wrote on Tuesday. “It is heartbreaking to hear the contempt and racist words directed towards my land and towards Latinos. Trump has made it clear, time and again, what he thinks of us, and the possibility of him and his administration returning to power is truly worrying. Words carry weight, and as a community, we must not tolerate language that seeks to devalue us. Latinos, inside and outside our homeland, deserve respect and fair representation.”
Omar isn’t the only artist with Puerto Rican ties who have spoken out since Hinchcliffe made his racist comments: Bad Bunny endorsed Harris on Sunday, while Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin doubled down on their support of the Democratic nominee yesterday.
“This is what they think of us,” Martin wrote, sharing the video of Hinchcliffe speaking. Lopez, meanwhile, shared several slides from Harris’ campaign. For his endorsement, Bad Bunny shared a video of Harris outlining her plans to give Puerto Rico more economic opportunities.
“It’s time to turn the page,” Omar wrote in his endorsement, invoking one of the Harris campaign’s phrases about moving on from Trump. “We are not going back.”
