Hal Rubenstein, a renowned designer, editor, and author, is all set to transform his best-selling book, which explores the impact of television on fashion, into a television series.
Rubenstein, who is one of the founding editors of InStyle magazine, is currently working on a docuseries adaptation of his 2023 best-seller, Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows. This project is a collaboration with Magilla Entertainment, the unscripted producer known for Discovery’s Moonshiners and HGTV’s Beachfront Bargain Hunt. The production team is currently showcasing the series to potential buyers.
The docuseries, like the book, will have Rubenstein in conversation with costume designers, producers, and stars, discussing how television has mirrored and shaped fashion trends over the years. The book features a variety of shows, including Friends, Emily in Paris, Miami Vice, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Empire, Gossip Girl, Dynasty, and RuPaul’s Drag Race, among others.
Rubenstein shared his excitement about the project, stating, “I’ve spent years documenting style in magazines, at fashion capitals, and on the red carpet, but nothing compares to the ever-growing influence of television. It has inspired our wardrobe choices for work, home, dates, vacations, and special events. Writing Dressing the Part was a delightful experience; I was amazed that no other book had highlighted the power of TV costume design, the talented artists behind it, and the decades of desirable clothing they’ve created. Now, using television to showcase its own influential, clever, and often dazzling power over our wardrobe choices is even more exciting. This is going to be fun.”
Laura Palumbo Johnson, the co-founder of Magilla Entertainment, expressed her enthusiasm about the project, stating, “A docuseries covering 70 years of television setting fashion trends is long overdue. The only person with the access, expertise, and gravitas to host a series like this is Hal Rubenstein. His book touched on a widely acknowledged yet unexplored phenomenon. We are thrilled to collaborate and build upon the source material.”
The project also received the backing of costume designer Eric Daman, known for his work on Billions and both versions of Gossip Girl. Featured in the book, Daman said, “With the media and cultural interest in the interplay between fashion and television, Hal’s insightful Dressing the Part serves as an iconic pop culture record of legendary TV style through the ages. This comprehensive, binge-worthy collection of design and insider knowledge is perfectly positioned to captivate viewers of all generations, including the most ardent fashion enthusiasts.”
