The Rocky Horror Show: A Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane

Whenever I read the words “The Rocky Horror Show”, I am transported back in time to a fan show I attended in 2005. Most of the audience at this show came fully equipped with suspenders, feather boas, extravagant lipstick, and the heckler’s appreciated selection of deliberately unfunny lines for key moments in the film.

Rocky Horror Show: A Campy Musical Tribute

Haven’t you seen Rocky Horror Show? It’s a wildly campy musical and a tribute to B-movie, on stage and screen, in which two homely, heteronormative Americans seek refuge in the castle run by Tim Curry’s mad scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter. I can’t judge how well it has aged, but it was a hit in the sexual counterculture of the 1970s and definitely Curry’s greatest moment outside of Command And Conquer.

A Moment During the Movie

Anyway, the most vital thing is that there is a moment during the movie where the castle rises and flies away. During the 2005 show, the entire audience shouted “it’s just a model!” at this moment. I replied “shhhh!” and the sexy girl behind me sighed, said “tssk” and gently patted the back of my head like you would scold a cat that’s staring at your lunch. But here’s the thing, lost lady of my youth: I wasn’t actually trying to silence people! I was doing some clever intermedia humor!

You see, there’s a part in Monty Python and the Holy Grail when King Arthur gets to Camelot and someone says, “It’s just a model,” and is silenced by the other knights. That’s what I meant, a former attractive woman! I just didn’t want to silence Rocky Horror fans. The flying castle scene is right at the end of the damn movie – why would I wait so long to intervene? Please, forgotten lady, with minimal respect for my personal space – please acknowledge that I am not Brad or Janet. I’m part of a clique. Please, if you are reading this, leave a comment and belatedly accept my deft mixing of tips. This exchange poisoned my soul for years.

Game Adaptation and Nostalgia

Oh hey! I just noticed that Rocky Horror Picture Show is getting another video game adaptation. The production is the responsibility of FreakZone Games, a group of retroheads whose works include, among others, renowned ones Spectacular Sparky AND Manos: Hands of fate. I originally wrote this post in my mood journal, but now I can publish it and benefit from my long-petrified feelings of shame and injustice. Here’s the trailer…

“Experience Brad and Janet’s strange journey like never before in this wild and wacky retro platform game adapted from Richard O’Brien’s legendary rock ‘n’ roll musical,” reads the blurb. “Jump left and dodge right in classic platforming, complete with 8-bit chiptune versions of legendary Rocky Horror songs.” I can’t find any store pages yet. Will there be a scene with a flying castle? Will I ever be free from the feeling of cautious humiliation and regret? You will know the answer to at least one of these questions when the game is released, later this month. Alternatively, dig out your Speccy and fire up previous adaptation from the 1980s.
