After integrating many Gemini AI features into Google Workspace, Google executives have expressed that this move is a significant step towards implementing AI agents at a large scale for organizations using its cloud productivity platform, which includes popular enterprise apps such as Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Meet, Google Sheets, Google Slides, and more.
Google Workspace boasts at least 8 million paying customers and holds an impressive 84.95% share of the cloud work apps market, according to Thrive, an online marketing agency.
Aparna Pappu, vice president and general manager of Google Workspace, highlighted Google’s incremental approach of “crawl, walk, run” in introducing AI agents to a wider user base.
“Bringing agents is akin to building blocks where users train their assistants to understand their workflows,” Pappu explained during a Q&A session at a Gemini at Work event in New York.
Gemini Integration into Google Workspace
Recently, Google has integrated the standalone Gemini chat app, powered by its Gemini AI model, into Workspace for paid Business, Enterprise, and Frontline accounts.
Gemini for Workspace enables users to request tasks such as summarizing emails on Gmail, retrieving information from multiple Google Drive documents, or generating custom charts on Sheets using natural language prompts.
Unlike other platforms catering to specific workflows like sales and marketing, Google Workspace caters to a broad and diverse audience.
Pappu noted that Google has been exploring agents on Workspace for some time, citing the AI Teammate demo Chip showcased during Google’s I/O developer conference in May.
Rollout of Workflow Automations
Google plans to gradually introduce Gemini-powered workflow automations on Workspace starting in October. This feature allows users to set up automated tasks that read emails or documents, categorize them, and perform actions accordingly.
For instance, if a user receives an email containing an invoice, Gemini can identify it as finance-related, categorize it, and forward it to the appropriate team for payment.
This workflow orchestration serves as a foundational element for AI agents.
