Guide to Streaming M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap from the Comfort of Your Home

Are you familiar with M. Night Shyamalan? The mastermind behind many intense thrillers that often perplex audiences with their unique twists? He’s returned with “Trap”, a brilliant film that has stirred up mixed reactions among viewers. I am fully on board with “Trap”, and I’m not the only one. Our very own Jeremy Mathai shared a largely positive review, describing “Trap” as a smartly crafted thriller featuring an unlikely hero, a darkly humorous romp that’s surprisingly whimsical, and a genre-bending film teetering on the edge of B-movie and exploitation.

However, Jeremy felt that “Trap” lost momentum in its third act. The most common criticisms I’ve heard about the film concern this third act, when “Trap” shifts its main setting and ventures into uncharted territory. But let me assure you, the third act is, in my opinion, the film’s strongest part. It’s during this act that Shyamalan lets loose and showcases his unique brand of strangeness. In essence, I adored “Trap”, third act included, and I can’t wait to watch it again at home.

Luckily, I’ll get my opportunity soon as “Trap” is making its way to digital and Blu-ray. According to Warner Bros., on August 30, 2024, “Trap” will be available for early Premium Digital Ownership at home and for a 48-hour rental via PVOD on participating digital platforms where you purchase movies, including Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Fandango At Home, and more. For those who prefer physical media (like myself!), “Trap” will be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on November 5, 2024.

In “Trap”, Josh Hartnett portrays Cooper, an awkward father who takes his teenage daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to a concert to see Lady Raven (Saleka Night Shyamalan), a pop star akin to Taylor Swift. But this is no ordinary concert! As it turns out, Cooper is actually a notorious serial killer known as the Butcher. Law enforcement officials don’t know the Butcher’s identity, but they somehow know he’s at this concert – and they’ve set a trap to catch him. Once he becomes aware of this, Cooper must use his wits to escape the concert stadium without getting caught and revealing his true nature to his daughter.

While “Trap” is a thriller, it’s clear that Shyamalan wants us to enjoy this narrative, making “Trap” all the more delightful. I genuinely believe some viewers didn’t understand this movie was meant to be humorous, which may have affected their views of it. As the director told /Film:

“You know, I’ve always had this tendency towards dark humor… ‘Signs’ was probably the film where I incorporated the most humor up to that point. But it’s now my instinct and from ‘The Visit’ onwards, I’ve added it into everything. And I think nervous laughter is a really enjoyable thing. And because when we go see movies in the theater together, it’s so joyful to hear everyone laughing, which then turns into gasps, which then turns into screams and applause, hopefully.”

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I believe “Trap” will stand the test of time. In a few years, people will recognize this as a fun film that deserves more acclaim. The first step towards this reevaluation will be when the film comes home on digital and Blu-ray. Not only will viewers have a fresh opportunity to see the film, but they’ll also get to enjoy the following special features.

  • Setting the Trap: A New M. Night Shayamalan Experience
  • Saleka as Lady Raven
  • Deleted Scenes
    • Cooper Gets Stopped by SWAT
    • Riley Shows Lady Raven Her Room
    • Cooper Takes a Hostage and Slips Away
  • Extended Concert Scene: Where Did She Go
