How ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Changed Ted Danson’s Life After Initially Thinking It ‘Sucked’

Ted Danson, notable for his role in “Cheers,” featured in almost every one of the 12 seasons of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” playing a heightened version of himself and becoming one of Larry David’s adversaries on the show. His portrayal of a pompous and arrogant version of himself made him a beloved character on the show, with his most recent appearance in the show’s finale.

Despite his successful role, Danson was initially doubtful of the improvisational nature of the HBO sitcom, and only agreed to portray himself out of sympathy for David.

Danson expressed on his podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” while conversing with “Curb” star J.B. Smoove, “‘Curb’ genuinely transformed my life as it revived my passion to be humorous.” However, when he first viewed the pilot with his wife, Mary Steenburgen, Danson was underwhelmed and thought it was subpar.

Danson recalled, “I thought it was terrible, and I felt pity for my newfound friend, Larry David.” Hence, in a bid to be supportive, Danson offered, ‘If you ever want us to portray ourselves, we’d be more than willing.’ Ironically, this seemingly foolish offer landed him a role that transformed his life.”

As expected, David accepted Danson’s offer, and he, along with Steenburgen, starred as exaggerated versions of themselves in the second episode of “Curb,” humorously titled “Ted and Mary.”

Recently, Danson made the news again, recalling an incident from the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” set when he realized during filming that his character was loathed by David’s character. When he arrived at his mark too soon, Danson overheard a conversation between David and another “Curb” actor, which was something like: “Danson, he’s a real jerk.”

Danson admitted on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” in November, “I was taken aback, ‘Wait, what?’ Because I never read the scripts.” He further recounted, “I consulted Jeff Garlin, and he confessed, ‘You don’t know? You’re the most despicable person on the planet. Larry detests you!’”
