The director of 2022’s “Barbarian”, Zach Cregger, is a man on a mission. With multiple projects on his plate, including the much-anticipated sci-fi/horror movie “Companion”, and his new film “Weapons” scheduled for release later this year, he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Now, it seems he’s set his sights on one of the most iconic franchises in video gaming history – “Resident Evil”. Get ready, folks, a reboot is on the horizon!

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger is slated to pen and helm a fresh movie adaptation of the renowned Capcom video game series. Details regarding the plot are being kept under tight wraps, but it’s been reported that this fresh interpretation aims to return “the title to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games”. The news has Hollywood buzzing with excitement. Major studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix, are reportedly embroiled in an intense bidding war for the project’s rights.

The film rights to “Resident Evil” are held by Constantine Film, which will be producing the project, alongside PlayStation Productions, a company established in 2019 dedicated to adapting its video games into movies and TV shows. Interestingly, Cregger’s production company has an agreement with Warner Bros./New Line Cinema, which could potentially be a factor in the project’s future. However, in the end, it may all boil down to who can offer the most lucrative deal and agreeable terms.

While the success of video game adaptations has been a mixed bag, the “Resident Evil” series stands out as a financial success. The franchise has raked in over $1.2 billion in box office revenue, tracing back to its 2002 debut. The series boasts seven live-action films and a number of animated features, most of which were released directly on video.

Cregger’s success with “Barbarian”, which raked in an impressive $45 million against a modest $4.5 million budget, underscores the growing confidence in his filmmaking prowess. The film’s positive reception highlighted his inventive approach to genre filmmaking, even under resource constraints. For a franchise that has been stagnant for some time, a fresh perspective like Cregger’s is a welcome development.

As highlighted by my colleague BJ Colangelo following the release of 2021’s “Welcome to Raccoon City”, pleasing the diverse “Resident Evil” fanbase in the current era is a daunting task. Netflix’s live-action series lasted for just one season, while the action-centric films featuring Milla Jovovich had seemingly reached their conclusion with 2017’s “The Final Chapter”. The faithful adaptation of the games in “Raccoon City” didn’t fare so well either. So, what’s the next step? That’s for Cregger to decide.

Personally, I think Cregger is just the person to entrust with this endeavor. As a lifelong gamer and a fan of the series, paired with my admiration for “Barbarian”, which I consider my favorite film of 2022, this seems like a perfect pairing. If paired with the right studio support, this could be a delightful experience. Thankfully, it appears that Cregger and the producers are firmly in the driver’s seat. Here’s hoping for the best.

As of now, the release date for the new “Resident Evil” movie is yet to be announced. Stay tuned for updates.
