Acclaimed director Jason Reitman got some harsh feedback from the legendary Chevy Chase on his film “Saturday Night”.
While appearing on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast, which is hosted by former cast members of “SNL”, David Spade and Dana Carvey, Reitman shared his experience of Chase’s blunt critique of his film.
Reitman narrated how Chase, accompanied by his wife Jayni, came to watch the film. After the screening, he approached Reitman, patted him on the shoulder, and said, ‘Well, you should be embarrassed.’
Spade described Chase’s response as a typical “Chevy thing” to say and added that one couldn’t have scripted a better moment. Carvey chimed in, suggesting that Chase might have been trying to make Reitman uncomfortable because he found the situation humorous, seeing it as one of the most challenging things one could say to a director.

Reitman shared that he was trying to balance his feelings as he was experiencing a unique Chevy Chase moment that was entirely personal. He appreciated the comedy aspect of it, but he was also aware that he’d spent about two years of his life trying to perfectly recreate and capture the essence of Chevy in his work. He’d hoped to bring out the humanity in Chevy and give him a chance to be loved. However, none of that seemed to matter to Chase.
