Binoche’s contributions to the film industry have been widely recognized and appreciated. Speaking about her appointment as the Cannes jury president, Binoche said that she is excited about sharing her life experiences with the members of the jury and the public.

“In 1985, I made my first appearance on the steps of Cannes as a young actress full of enthusiasm and uncertainty. I never dreamt that I would return 40 years later in the esteemed role of President of the Jury. I am profoundly grateful for this privilege and am aware of the responsibility that comes with it, as well as the need for humility,” she added.

Binoche’s illustrious career spanning over 40 years and 70 films began with her first major role in André Téchiné’s “Rendez-vous.” This film debuted at Cannes in 1985, which is why Binoche often says she “was born at the Cannes Film Festival.”

Her most recent appearance at Cannes was in 2023 with Trần Anh Hùng’s “The Taste of Things,” which won the award for best director.

In addition to being a courageous actor, Binoche has occasionally ventured into high-profile TV projects, notably “The Staircase,” and “The New Look,” an AppleTV+ series where she portrays Coco Chanel. She also had a memorable role in an episode of “Call My Agent!” in which she plays herself, presiding over the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival and rejecting the advances of a powerful yet sleazy movie producer.

Binoche, a progressive figure who was recently elected president of the European Film Academy, has been vocal about her concerns over education, undocumented immigration, and human rights in Iran. She has also been an active supporter of the #MeToo movement in France.

The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place from May 13-24. Registration for the festival began on Monday and will close on April 18. The festival’s Official Selection, curated by Cannes Film Festival’s director and artistic director Thierry Fremaux and his selection committee, will be announced in mid-April.

In related news, Cannes’s president Iris Knobloch was recently re-elected for a second three-year term as the head of the festival.
