Depp expressed her disappointment over the negative comments about Sam Levinson during her conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. She said, “It was disheartening to hear people criticize Sam, who I see as a good friend and practically family.” Levinson and his wife Ashley, a producer on the show, were like a mentor to her, always there to guide her.

The star of Nosferatu continued to express her dismay over the unfair criticism faced by Levinson. She affirmed that the negative comments about Levinson’s filmmaking skills were far from her own experience working with him. It pained her to hear derogatory remarks about a dear friend.

The HBO series, The Idol, depicted Depp as a troubled pop star, Jocelyn, who gets entangled in a complex relationship with Tedros, a nightclub owner and a contemporary cult leader. However, the series only lasted for one season before it was canceled.

Depp confessed to loving her character and the series despite its controversial nature. She stated, “We were always aware that the series would stir controversy. And I am drawn to that kind of work.”

The Voyagers actress further elaborated on her stance saying, “People form their own opinions about things, and you just have to remain firm in your beliefs. I was pushed out of my comfort zone during the filming of the series, but it was a positive experience for me. It was a period of immense personal growth and will always remain a special chapter in my life.”

Depp further stated, “We did intentionally push societal boundaries a bit. The reception wasn’t always favorable, but I don’t regret it. It was a beautiful experience, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it.”

The Wolf actress, also the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, echoed similar sentiments in June 2023 during the show’s premiere. She clarified, “None of us were trying to make a show that would be fun for the entire family.”

The show’s promotional materials had a certain edginess to them. However, it attracted unfavorable attention when Rolling Stone published an exposé alleging that the series went “wildly, disgustingly off the rails” after the original director, Amy Seimetz, left the project.
