Matchstick Piehouse Reopens After Community Campaign

Published:

Are you ready to hear about the exciting news at Matchstick Piehouse in south London? After a successful yearlong community campaign, this grassroots venue is set to reopen its doors in early 2025. Let’s explore the journey that led to this revival and what it means for the local community.

The Revival of Matchstick Piehouse

In November 2023, Matchstick Piehouse faced closure due to rent arrears accumulated during the COVID-19 shutdown. However, a group of dedicated staff and resident artists came together to form the Piehouse Co-op, a workers co-op that negotiated new terms with the building’s landowners, thanks to the support of the Music Venues Trust (MVT).

Now, Matchstick Piehouse is on a mission to raise £15,000 to furnish the venue, as it was stripped of all its assets during insolvency, including lights, sound equipment, and furniture. This fundraising effort follows the £30,000 raised in 2023, demonstrating the community’s commitment to preserving this cultural hub.

The Challenges Faced by Grassroots Music Venues

Unfortunately, grassroots music venues have faced significant challenges in recent years. The MVT’s annual report for 2023 highlighted the tough year, with 125 out of 960 surveyed venues ceasing to host live music, and more than half of them closing down completely. Additionally, a report from the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) in May 2024 revealed that the UK lost an average of five nightclubs per week.

Rosetta Carr, a staff member at Matchstick Piehouse, emphasized the importance of venues like Piehouse in nurturing creativity and providing alternative sources of income for artists. She shared her perspective as a touring musician navigating the ever-changing music industry landscape.

Supporting Grassroots Nightlife Venues

As we look ahead to Matchstick Piehouse’s reopening, a fundraiser event is scheduled for December 11, with tickets already on sale. This event will not only celebrate the venue’s resilience but also showcase the community’s unwavering support for grassroots nightlife venues.
