By which we mean, his next film is The Odyssey – a new adaptation of Homer’s epic Greek poem, likely sending the filmmaker into fantastical territory for the first time. In recent weeks, we’ve seen various updates come in on Nolan’s next project – largely, a gigantic swathe of casting, with Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron and more among the impressively sprawling ensemble. But now, we have our very first look at the film – one that not only gives us a first glimpse at what Nolan is cooking here, but that confirms the most important role.
The Role of Matt Damon as Odysseus
There we have it – Matt Damon re-teaming with his Interstellar director, and confirmed to be playing Odysseus. Previous reports had indicated that Tom Holland would be the lead in The Odyssey, but this look at Damon complicates that. Unless the film is told through the lens of another character, or if Holland plays a younger Odysseus in the narrative (you have to expect some timey-wimey shenanigans with a Nolan movie), it now seems that Damon will be the central figure in the film. And he wears that armour well – bring on Odysseus’ monster-strewn 10-year journey home.
