Miley Cyrus Faces Lawsuit for Copyright Infringement Against Bruno Mars

Published:

Miley Cyrus is facing a lawsuit for copyright infringement regarding her 2023 hit “Flowers.” The pop star, who is 31 years old, has been accused of copying the melody, harmony, and chorus of Bruno Mars’ 2012 hit “When I Was Your Man” by Tempo Music Investments, a company that claims ownership of the latter song, according to TMZ.

Although the lyrics of Miley’s song are similar to Bruno’s, they were considered to be only similar ideas, which is why Bruno was not credited as a co-writer on “Flowers.”

The chorus of Miley’s song includes the lines: “I can buy myself flowers / Write my name in the sand / Talk to myself for hours / Say things you don’t understand / I can take myself dancing / And I can hold my own hand / Yeah, I can love me better than you can.”

In comparison, Bruno sings in his track: “That I should’ve bought you flowers and held your hand … / Now my baby’s dancin’, but she’s dancin’ with another man.”

Despite winning multiple awards for “Flowers,” including a Grammy for Record of the Year, Tempo Music Investments claims that Miley’s success with the song would not have been possible without “When I Was Your Man.”

The company is not only seeking financial compensation from Miley but also wants her to be prohibited from performing the song in the future. Bruno, who is 38 years old, is not involved in the lawsuit against Miley.

“Flowers” was featured on Miley’s album Endless Summer Vacation and was rumored to be inspired by her ex-husband, 34-year-old actor Liam Hemsworth.

Reflecting on the global success of the song, Miley expressed her gratitude on Twitter, stating: “Celebrating ‘Flowers’ being #1 around the world again this week! I love that this record is connecting in such a positive way and it’s a pleasure to continue creating music for you. These milestones are only made possible by the listeners and my incredible fans. Endlessly thankful.”
