Milli Vanilli: The Controversial Grammy Revocation

Milli Vanilli made history as the first and only act to have their Grammy revoked. Surprisingly, the surviving member of this controversial German R&B group revealed that they actually wanted to give back the Grammy in the first place.

The Redemption of Milli Vanilli

Over 30 years after their scandal shook the music industry, Milli Vanilli is experiencing a form of redemption. This redemption comes in the form of a documentary and the inclusion of their music in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

Fab Morvan’s Candid Interview

Fab Morvan, one half of the disgraced group, recently shared his thoughts in an interview. He discussed the unexpected resurgence of interest in Milli Vanilli’s music, style, and story, aiming to clarify the Grammy controversy.

The Grammy Controversy

On February 21, 1990, Milli Vanilli won the Best New Artist award at the 32nd annual ceremony. However, their victory was short-lived as it was later revealed that Morvan and his partner Rob Pilatus were lip-synching. Consequently, the Grammy was rescinded by the Recording Academy.

The Attempted Gesture

Morvan disclosed that during a press conference in 1990, he and Pilatus had intended to return their Grammy voluntarily. Unfortunately, the press preempted their decision.

A Change of Heart

Morvan expressed, “We did it to say, ‘We know we were wrong, and we came here to let you know, Hey, we want to give this Grammy back.’ That’s what we wanted, because we didn’t think we deserved it, and it didn’t feel like it belonged in our house.”

“But when we informed them that we were going to give it back, the Los Angeles Times told NARAS [the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences] and then they jumped the gun,” he continues. “This is one of the most important misconceptions for me. We actually wanted to give it back, but the press made it seem that the Grammy federation forcibly reclaimed it from us.”

The Aftermath

Despite their efforts, Morvan and Pilatus struggled to redeem themselves. Tragically, Pilatus passed away from a drug overdose in 1998 at the age of 32, just as they were gearing up for a tour.

The Revival of Milli Vanilli

Thanks to recent projects like Monsters and the 2023 documentary, Morvan is experiencing a resurgence in the spotlight. This newfound attention includes a fashion collaboration honoring the iconic style of the duo.

A New Chapter

Morvan reflects, “Now I feel like I’ve got a chance to go into a new and exciting story. A new chapter, and people are slowly starting to read it. I’ve been working on that chapter for a long time.”
