The 2024 shortlist features nine albums selected from a pool of 600 submissions and narrowed down from 46 nominated records released by Australian musicians in the past year.
This year’s selection includes esteemed artists like Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, who secured a spot with their 18th album “Wild God.” Nick Cave has previously been nominated for the prize four times, with notable works like “Skeleton Tree” in 2016, “Ghosteen” in 2019, and the collaborative album “Carnage” with Warren Ellis in 2021.
Punk sensation Amyl and The Sniffers have also made their mark on the shortlist with their third album “Cartoon Darkness,” earning them their third nomination. Additionally, Melbourne’s neo-soul group Hiatus Kaiyote received a nod for their album “Love Heart Cheat Code,” following their 2021 nomination for “Mood Valiant.”
Newcomers Grace Cummings and Rowena Wise have also been recognized for their albums “Ramona” and “Senseless Acts of Beauty,” respectively. The First Nations community is represented by Walmatjarri Elder Kankawa Nagarra’s “Wirlmarni” and Dobby’s “Warrangu; River Story.”
Two of the shortlisted albums are also contenders for ARIA Awards, with Dobby’s record up for Best World Music Album and Audrey Powne’s “From the Fire” in the running for Best Jazz Album.
Founded by Scott Murphy, the Australian Music Prize has honored artists like Sampa the Great, the Avalanches, and Courtney Barnett in the past. The most recent winners include King Stingray and RVG.
