Nick Frost’s New Horror Comedy: A Spoiler-Free, Bloody Delight

Nick Frost, known for his significant role in “Shaun of the Dead,” one of the best horror-comedy films ever made, is returning to the genre with “Get Away.” This is exciting news for fans who have been eagerly waiting for Frost’s reunion with director Edgar Wright and co-star Simon Pegg. However, the enjoyment of this movie hinges on the ability to steer clear of spoilers. Consider this your warning.

I was lucky enough to watch the film at this year’s Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Although it wasn’t the best film I saw — “The Wild Robot” claims that title — it did provide the most unexpected twist, leaving me grinning and chuckling with pleasure. This surprise element is key, and I suspect that IFC Films and Shudder will be quite subtle in their marketing to preserve this. So, if you’re intrigued, proceed with caution.

“Get Away” follows the Smith family on their vacation to the small Swedish island of Svälta. Despite warnings from the mainlanders to steer clear of the island, particularly during the Karantan festival, the family decides to go anyway. Once they arrive, they encounter hostility and rudeness from the locals, hinting at impending danger.

Steffen Haars (“Krazy House”) directed the film, with Frost not only writing the screenplay but also playing the patriarch of the Smith family. Frost revealed that the film was inspired by his childhood visits to a small island where the locals were not welcoming. This is a case of art imitating life, although the film is decidedly more gory than Frost’s real-life experiences.

I’m not here to make grandiose claims about the film or to say that it’s a life-altering cinematic experience. My goal is to make sure this delightful film doesn’t go unnoticed. I know there are fans out there who appreciate Frost’s unique sense of humor and are craving more “Shaun of the Dead” style comedy. This film might just satisfy that craving.

Frost has consistently contributed to the horror-comedy genre beyond “Shaun.” He and Pegg collaborated on the supernatural Amazon Prime Video series “Truth Seekers,” which unfortunately only lasted one season. They also teamed up for the lesser-known “Slaughterhouse Rulez” in 2018. However, “Get Away” feels like the best horror-comedy Frost has been involved in since “Shaun.” This makes it worth preserving the unexpected twists and turns.

While I’m not usually overly concerned about light spoilers, in this case, the less said, the better. Once you’ve decided to watch this film, avoid any additional information and just savor the experience when it comes. The film is set to be released in theaters towards the end of the year before landing on Shudder in early 2025. So, plan your viewing accordingly, fellow horror-comedy enthusiasts.

“Get Away” will be in theaters on December 6, 2024.
