The Maverick Approach to Beatles Biopics
If you’re going to tell the story of arguably the biggest band of all time, it makes sense to take a maverick approach. And when it comes to Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles movies, the filmmaker is certainly taking the road less traveled so far. Not only is the 1917 filmmaker making a whole quartet of Fab Four biopics, one for each member of the band, but he’s also seemingly abandoned casting announcement convention to let legends of popular culture do the job for him. After Ringo Starr seemingly confirmed Barry Keoghan will play him in Mendes’ films late last month, THR are now reporting — via Ridley Scott, no less — that Paul Mescal is heading from Ancient Rome to 60s Liverpool and is set to star as singer-songwriter Paul McCartney.
Paul Mescal’s Journey to the Fab Four
Taking part in a post-Gladiator II screening Q&A with Christopher Nolan at the Directors Guild of America last night, Scott confirmed plans for his next movie to be apocalyptic thriller The Dog Stars. When questioned as to whether his swords-and-sandals sequel’s star Mescal would star in the movie, as has been widely reported, Scott revealed that he is — before quickly having to caveat that with the admission that, due to Mescal’s busy schedule, it may not be quite so straight forward getting the band back together so to speak. Having turned his yes to a maybe on The Dog Stars question, Scott casually let slip Mescal’s involvement in the upcoming Fab Four films, saying, “Paul is actually stacked up, doing the Beatles next. So I may have to let him go.”
The Road to the Beatles Biopics
Now, as is the case with Keoghan’s purported casting, it is worth noting that nothing has been set in stone just yet for these Beatles biopics — no casting has been officially confirmed. However, on the long and winding road to the movies getting made, two of the four rumoured stars of the ambitious quartet of films have now been name dropped by sources you would consider legitimate (ie, actual Ringo Starr himself, and the legendary director who’s literally just made a movie with Mescal.) Whether we’ll imminently get Nicole Kidman announcing her Babygirl co-lead Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, or Stranger Things’ Vecna singing a bit of ‘Here Comes The Sun’ to announce Joseph Quinn’s casting as George Harrison, very much remains to be seen. But with Mendes’ fully authorised and family-blessed biopics due to land in cinemas in 2027, we’ll soon see for ourselves just how exactly it will all come together.
