“Perfect Couple” Surpasses “Rings of Power” in Luminate Streaming Ratings with 3.4 Billion Minutes Viewed

Published:

In the second week of its release, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 saw a significant decline in viewership on Luminate’s weekly streaming originals chart. After a stellar week where the series from Amazon Prime Video secured second place with 764.7 million minutes watched, the figures dropped to 372.7 million minutes for the Sept. 6-12 viewing period.

This drastic drop in viewership of over 50% is not a good sign for such a prominent IP title especially as word-of-mouth still maintained a fairly strong appeal. It’s noteworthy that these numbers are only reflective of U.S. viewership as measured by Luminate.

The most watched original streaming title for the week was “The Perfect Couple,” with a whopping 3.4 billion minutes watched. This breakout Netflix series managed to cross 3 billion minutes on Luminate’s chart, a record not seen since “Bridgerton” Season 2 Part 2 in June.

At second place was “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” a Hulu original which debuted with 781.1 million minutes viewed in its first week. This was followed by season 8 of “Selling Sunset,” another unscripted title which debuted with 586.7 million minutes watched.

Coming after “Rings of Power” were titles such as “Outlast” Season 2 (317 million), “Worst Ex Ever” (310.7 million) and “Kaos” (307.9 million), while the last three titles on the chart — “The Accident,” “Bad Monkey” and “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” — all recorded less than 300 million minutes watched.

On the movie chart, Netflix’s “Rebel Ridge” topped the chart with 1.5 billion minutes viewed in its first week. Following it were “The Deliverance,” with 309.8 million minutes, and “The Union,” with 149 million minutes in its fourth week.

The remaining chart positions were filled by titles that had less than a million minutes watched including “Apollo 12: Survival,” “The Killer,” “The Assistant 2” (one of the rare chart appearances for Tubi), “Jackpot!,” “Incoming,” “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and “The Instigators.”

As a point of disclosure, Luminate and Variety share a common owner in Penske Media Corp.
