Expanding the universe of “Star Wars” is the brand new show, “Skeleton Crew”, directed by Jon Watts, who is known for Tom Holland’s “Spider-Man” trilogy. This Disney+ series is set to bring the magic of live-action “Star Wars” to the television screen, following the path of its predecessors such as “The Mandalorian” and “Andor”. However, unlike the traditional chronological release of the franchise’s installments, the Disney era has seen a more scattered release pattern. So, the question arises – when is the setting for “Skeleton Crew”?

In broad terms, “Skeleton Crew” is set in the New Republic era of the “Star Wars” timeline, which is post the events of “Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi”. This is a time when the Galactic Empire has fallen and the Rebellion has attempted to establish a new governing body for the galaxy. However, remnants of the Empire still linger, leading to a period of instability. This era has been the backdrop for other shows as well, including “The Mandalorian”.

For instance, the first season of “The Mandalorian” is set about five years after “Return of the Jedi”. Although the timeline in the show’s third season became a bit unclear, it, along with “The Book of Boba Fett” and “Ahsoka”, shares the same timeline. This is significant considering the projects Lucasfilm has in the pipeline and their potential impact on “Skeleton Crew”.

Why the timeline of Skeleton Crew matters

“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” tells the tale of four children who stumble upon a mystery on their seemingly secure homeworld and find themselves adrift in a bizarre and perilous galaxy. Their journey home will require them to encounter new friends and foes in an adventure beyond their wildest dreams.

Unlike “The Acolyte”, which is set during the High Republic era centuries before the prequel trilogy, “Skeleton Crew” follows these children navigating through a treacherous galaxy. This is a time when, following the Empire’s downfall, power-hungry individuals are keen to seize any chance to gain control. The former rulers, on the other hand, are desperately trying to regain their lost power, leading to widespread lawlessness and uncertainty in the “Star Wars” galaxy.

Moreover, there’s a high possibility for “Skeleton Crew” to intersect with other shows like “The Mandalorian”, “The Book of Boba Fett”, and “Ahsoka”. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer, Dave Filoni, is presently working on a “Star Wars” film that will connect the events of “The Mandalorian” and its spinoffs. Could it be that the “Skeleton Crew” gang will also be part of this journey? Only time will tell, but the timeline certainly suggests that it’s a possibility.

The cast of “Skeleton Crew” features Jude Law, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, Tunde Adebimpe, Kerry Condon, and Nick Frost. The series is directed by Watts, along with David Lowery, Daniels (also known as Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Jake Schreier, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Lee Isaac Chung.

“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” will premiere on December 2, 2024, at 6pm PST on Disney+.
