Saying farewell to Boden (Eamonn Walker) and welcoming Dom (Dermot Mulroney) on Chicago Fire brings a new dynamic to Firehouse 51.
Meet the New Chief, Dom Pascal
With the return of Chicago Fire for season 13, a new chief takes the helm at Firehouse 51, known as Dom Pascal. Showrunner Andrea Newman highlights the impact of this change, stating, “It’s like Boden raised them. When a new chief starts, everybody’s going to have a different reaction. And some of the reactions are surprising.” Despite the shift, Boden’s legacy remains a crucial part of the show. Newman affirms, “Boden’s presence is still so much a part of the show, and it always will be, because he was so formative in the way that he put this group together and the way he raised this family up.”
New Beginnings and Familiar Faces
Introducing new characters to the close-knit Firehouse 51 family brings fresh dynamics and challenges. Newman reflects on this, saying, “There’s still such a core group there and they really do feel like a family and they always have. Bringing new people in is really a joy just as a writer. You get to see new dynamics, you get to see how certain people change, their relationships get shaken up a little bit by this new person coming in. The idea of sitting down and trying to write without the dad of this family, it honestly felt like how you feel as a parent when you’re hoping you raised your kids right.”

Unraveling Family Secrets
Family ties take center stage as Damon reveals a shocking truth to Severide about their shared father. Newman teases, “We kept feeling like this is haunted season 13. It’s kind of like people’s past ghosts coming back. That’s very true for Severide, where he’s worked really hard to put his father in the rearview mirror and become his own firefighter. So to suddenly have Benny’s son, his half-brother, appear in his life, it makes him have to re-explore all of that stuff. So it brings up a lot for Severide and that relationship is complicated and juicy with lots of unresolved issues.”
Facing Ghosts and Moving Forward
The haunting pasts of Violet and Carver add complexity to their present lives at Firehouse 51. Newman explains, “Violet’s haunted by Hawkins and what happened with that relationship. Carver, on the other hand, carries his own ghosts. The new season delves into their personal struggles and how it impacts their roles within the team.”
Tune in as Chicago Fire returns with gripping storytelling and character development on Wednesday, Sept. 25, on NBC.
