Dave Burd, known as Lil Dicky in the music world, is a true representation of the digital age artist. He gained popularity with his ingenious and humorous music videos, especially for his track “$ave Dat Money,” along with his impressive freestyle performances. His comedic show on FXX, fittingly named “Dave,” which aired in 2020, showcased a fictional version of Lil Dicky, loosely based on his real life. The show quickly became a hit among critics and fans.
However, the journey of “Dave” came to an unexpected halt with the end of its third season that was themed around a cross-country tour. In February 2024, FX announced that a fourth season was not planned, a decision disclosed nine months post the finale of the third season. An FX spokesperson shared this news through a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter).
“Following several discussions, we currently have no plans for a fourth season of ‘Dave’ as Dave Burd has chosen to take a break to focus on his music and other projects. This does not eliminate the possibility of a future endeavor. We are grateful for the creative brilliance Dave, Jeff Schaffer, and the entire cast and crew brought to each episode. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Dave as he develops future projects through his overall production deal with FXP.”
Interestingly, FX executives have not completely closed the doors on future possibilities. The show’s cancellation doesn’t fit the traditional definition. “Justified”, for instance, was revived in the form of “Justified: City Primeval” eight years after its closure post six seasons in 2015. In the meantime, Burd has turned his focus to other projects.
Dave was not the only thing on Lil Dicky’s agenda

Burd’s ambition to explore his music and other creative pursuits seems to be the primary reason behind the non-renewal of “Dave” season 4. This was further confirmed by Burd himself, who expressed his feelings when the discontinuation of the fourth season was announced.
“Creating ‘Dave’ was and continues to be a dream come true. However, there are other creative pursuits I am eager to explore. I have invested my complete energy into the show for the past five years, and after three successful seasons, this feels like the right time to take a break and devote time to other things I’ve always wanted to do. I am extremely excited about my future plans and deeply thankful to FX for their continued partnership.”
The third season of “Dave” delved into the concept of fame and its impact on an individual. Certainly, if time was not a constraint, FX and Burd could have plenty of ideas for at least one more season. Creatively, the series was far from a decline in the third season. However, managing time becomes challenging when you have a massive fan base. For instance, creating a new album and going on its tour are time-consuming tasks. This leaves little room for television production, especially when the artist is involved as the main star, executive producer, and writer of the show.
This is quite similar to Justin Timberlake’s strategy of balancing his music career with acting. He continues to produce music while also acting in films like “Trolls” and “Reptile.” While this seems like a luxury problem, time is nonetheless a limited resource. Hopefully, once Burd completes his other projects, the opportunity for a return to “Dave” or perhaps an entirely different project will arise.
You can stream “Dave” on Hulu. The series’ soundtrack is also available for purchase on Amazon.
