Robert De Niro: A Master of Mobsters
Robert De Niro is a seasoned actor who has portrayed mobsters with great finesse throughout his illustrious career. However, in his upcoming film, The Alto Knights, he takes on his most challenging mobster roles yet. Written by the acclaimed Nicholas ‘Goodfellas’ Pileggi and directed by Barry Levinson, De Niro not only plays the central mob boss Frank Costello but also embodies the character of Vito Genovese. These former friends turned foes clash in the bustling streets of mid-20th Century New York, showcasing De Niro’s talent in a dual role.
The Dual Persona: Costello vs. Genovese
Stepping into the shoes of both mafiosos presented De Niro with a compelling challenge. He shares, “The idea of playing the two different characters was intriguing to me.” Each character, Costello and Genovese, brings a unique approach to their leadership styles. De Niro explains, “They’re like two different sides of the same coin. One is more rational, more diplomatic – that’s the Costello character. The Genovese character is more erratic, more impulsive.” Director Levinson finds the contrast in personalities to be a source of intense drama, as childhood friends become bitter enemies.
A Spontaneous Casting Choice
The decision for De Niro to portray both roles stemmed from a spontaneous suggestion by producer Irvin Winkler. Initially cast as Costello, Winkler proposed De Niro take on the additional role of Vito Genovese. Recalling the moment, Winkler shares, “[De Niro] said, ‘Who do you think would be right to play Vito Genovese?’ And I thought about it for a couple of beats, and I couldn’t think of anybody better than him. I said, ‘You know what, you should play both parts.’ It was really that spontaneous.”
