Ryan Reynolds Advocates for More ‘Blade’ Following Wesley Snipes’ Marvel Comeback

Published:

Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds is taking to social media to request the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for “more Blade” following Wesley Snipes’ comeback to the esteemed franchise. This came nearly a month after Deadpool & Wolverine, the latest Marvel Studios’ production, hit the billion-dollar mark. Reynolds used Instagram as a platform to express his admiration for Snipes.

Reynolds posted a behind-the-scenes picture of the pair on set, effusively praising Blade’s surprise cameo. He wrote, “The moment @realwesleysnipes steps into the movie is the most electrifying thing I’ve ever experienced in a theater. The sound of people expressing their joy and love without restraint is also the sound of a legacy. More Blade, please. #DayWalker. A Logan-style send off, specifically.”

Snipes had previously disclosed how he found himself once again playing his iconic role. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the Florida-born actor revealed that he has been in touch with Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios over the years, but nothing concrete ever emerged.

However, things changed when Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, the company that once held the film rights to Blade, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, and Daredevil. With this acquisition, the heroes were officially back home. Upon hearing the news, Reynolds, who co-starred with Snipes in 2004’s Blade: Trinity, texted Snipes, expressing his desire to speak with him. The rest, as they say, is billion-dollar history.

“Throughout the years, we’ve had intriguing discussions, some substantive, some not so much,” Snipes shared with EW. “I had resigned myself to the fact that I was moving on from them, which is fine. I did three of them, and I thought they were pretty decent. So, we move on to other things, bigger and better.”

“I didn’t believe it was feasible,” the renowned actor reminisced. “I didn’t think we could pull it off. I didn’t think Marvel or Disney was interested, especially since they had cast Mahershala [Ali] for the next version of it. It didn’t make sense to me, but when you receive a call from Ryan Reynolds out of nowhere after 20 years, you think, ‘Okay, I have to take this call. Let’s see what this is about. He told me the idea… They said ‘yes’ and ‘it’s a go.’ ‘If you’re in, we’re in.’ And here we are.”

For the past five years, Feige and Marvel Studios have been trying to create their own Blade. In July 2019, the internet was abuzz with the news that Ali would be the next Blade. Since then, the movie has seen a series of changes, including the addition of new directors and scriptwriters.

As the film underwent more changes in June, Shelby Weiser, Ali’s lawyer, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the staggering number of issues plaguing the film. He said, “That deal was in 2019, and they still haven’t shot it, which is pretty much the most insane thing I’ve experienced professionally.”
