As per exclusive information obtained by Variety, Sam Nivola has been cast in a leading role in the upcoming Hulu comedy pilot titled “Phony.”
Nivola will share the screen with Connie Britton in this highly anticipated pilot. The announcement of Britton’s involvement came in October alongside the pilot order.
The proposed plot of the pilot involves a coming-of-age mystery narrative. According to the official logline, it revolves around “a teenager (Nivola) who, after surviving a car accident, wakes up in the hospital only to find that his mother (Britton) — his sole parent and closest friend — seems to have been swapped with a doppelganger.”
Sonny, the character played by Nivola, is introduced as “the most popular student at his high school, understood truly only by his mother.”

Nivola was last seen on screen in Netflix’s popular series “The Perfect Couple,” playing the character Will Winbury. This show secured its place in the Netflix Top 10 English language TV chart upon release and maintained its position for over a month. Nivola’s breakout role was in the Noah Baumbach movie “White Noise,” where he starred opposite Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig. His filmography includes esteemed movies such as Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” and “Eileen,” and the miniseries “The Pursuit of Love.” Fans can also expect to see him in the forthcoming third season of HBO’s “The White Lotus.”

The pilot of “Phony” is helmed by Nick Paley who serves as the writer, executive producer, and director. Britton is also on board as an executive producer, in addition to her acting role. The list of executive producers also includes Charlie Alderman of Charlie’s Production Company, Drew Goddard, and Sarah Esberg from Goddard Textiles. Andrea Massaro of Goddard Textiles will serve as a producer. The studio behind the project is 20th Television, which took over after the initial studio, ABC Signature, was recently merged into 20th TV.
