The initial segment of the fourth season of Outer Banks wrapped up with various suspenseful moments for the Pogues, which are expected to be addressed, at least partially, in the latter half of the season.

On Kildare Island, a major revelation is dropped on Rudy Pankow’s character, JJ. He discovers that he is not the offspring of his abusive, alcoholic father, Luke (Gary Weeks). His actual parents are the late Larissa Genrette and Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), making him the very kind of person he despises – a Kook, and the grandson of Wes Genrette (David Jansen).

“This news will result in a series of emotional outbursts,” Pankow reveals to The Hollywood Reporter, indicating how this revelation will affect JJ, arguably the most Pogue-like of all the Pogues, when the show returns with the concluding episodes on Nov. 7. “I anticipate it leading to an identity crisis in Part Two.”

He further elaborates, “I’m left questioning, who am I? Where do I stand? What kind of person have I become? Will my friends judge me? And who do I admire now? I believe that’s how the situation will unfold.”

Meanwhile, in Charleston, while in pursuit of Blackbeard’s Blue Crown, Carlacia Grant’s Cleo, Jonathan Daviss’ Pope, Madelyn Cline’s Sarah, and Chase Stokes’ John B are facing their own set of challenges.

Pope and Sarah venture into catacombs beneath an ancient church in search of the treasure. However, they are forced to hide among rats when Lightner (Rigo Sanchez) and his boss Dalia (Pollyanna McIntosh) appear and seize a mysterious scroll, likely a map. As the mercenaries leave the catacombs, they seal the only remaining exit, leaving the Pogues to potentially drown as the underground area starts to flood.

As Outer Banks prepares to return next month, Daviss hints that he’s “still in the catacombs, so hopefully, we’ll find a solution to that problem. There’s a lot happening on the cliffhanger, a lot of revelations happening, those things will continue to be explored.” The Do Revenge actor also suggests fans can look forward to “explosions, craziness, Pogue activity.”

Cleo, on the other hand, is grappling with the loss of Terrance (Terence Rosemore), her cherished father figure who reappeared in the series after being introduced in season two and was last seen in season three. The shipping captain was hired to work with the mercenaries as a crew member on their quest for Blackbeard’s treasure. But when he realizes Cleo is involved, his only desire is to protect her.

After the mercenaries abduct her, and she attempts to fight back, Lightner kills Terrance, a loss that the actress says will impact her character for the remainder of the season.

“Cleo is striving to cope with her trauma and the loss of Terrance, while also seeking revenge, maintaining her relationship [with Pope] and friendships, all while finding her footing in a new country she’s not from,” she explains to THR. “Cleo is never one to give up on what she wants. That’s the tea.”

Back on Figure Eight, Drew Starkey’s Rafe appears to be turning a new page, making amends after years of conflict with his sister, Sarah, and continuing his relationship with Sofia (Fiona Palomo).

Early in the Part One episodes, Rafe is approached by Hollis Robinson (Brianna Brown), a realtor who previously worked with his late father, Ward (Charles Esten). She informs him about a significant deal she has in the pipeline that she would like him to be a part of, but it would require him to invest a substantial amount of money.

Sofia initially advises Rafe against it, even when her father asks her to try to persuade him to agree to the deal. However, when Sofia overhears Rafe telling Topper (Austin North) and Ruthie (Mia Challis) that Sofia is not his girlfriend, she changes her mind. Sofia talks to Hollis, who tells her she’ll give her $25,000 if she can convince Rafe to do the deal. She takes the money.

After the interaction with Hollis, Sofia changes her stance with Rafe and tells him that he should make the deal, despite his intuition telling him not to. He goes ahead with it, then he takes Sofia out to Goat Island, the property allegedly being bought in the deal, and tells his girlfriend that he wants to keep a part of it and build a home with her. She has a change of heart and tries to tell him not to agree to the deal, but it’s too late.

When asked how Rafe will react if/when he finds out that Sofia took money to try to convince him to take the deal, Starkey tells THR: “Trust is a huge thing for him, and I don’t think he’s ever really had anyone that he can trust, either his family or loved ones. So I think that’s a sensitive subject for Rafe.”

One bright spot for the Pogues? All of their relationships seem to be going strong, and that’s not expected to change in the final batch of episodes.

John B and Sarah have had an on-again, off-again relationship since they started dating in season one, but by season four, they’re fully committed to each other, even declaring themselves married (though it’s not legally binding yet). The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery star shares that she feels she and Stokes’ characters are endgame in Outer Banks.

“We started out as the season one star-crossed lovers, the will-they-won’t-they,” Cline tells THR. “It’s kind of like that forbidden love. But at this point now, they always come back to each other, and I feel like that’s just how their relationship is, and they always will, especially given everything they’ve been through, if what they’ve been through hasn’t torn them apart.
