Warning: This article contains spoilers for That ’90s Show Part 3.
Laura Prepon continues to be part of the nostalgic journey from That ’70s Show to That ’90s Show, bringing her character Donna to life once again in a new era.
A familiar face from the original ’70s series, Laura Prepon has now taken on a larger role in the Netflix sequel series. In Part 3, Donna remains in Point Place with Leia, played by Callie Haverda, for an extended period while also stepping behind the camera to direct all eight episodes.
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Laura Prepon delves into her experience directing Part 3, the nostalgic recreation of the original opening credits in episode 6, and the suspenseful conclusion that leaves fans eagerly awaiting another season.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was it like directing all of Part 3?
LAURA PREPON: Stepping into the role of a TV director comes with the challenge of maintaining the show’s essence. However, having known the cast for two decades since ’70s, it felt like a reunion filled with love and trust. The familiarity of the sets allowed me to bring a fresh perspective to the show with the new cast. The experience was incredibly fulfilling, with a strong bond of trust and support among us. I hope this journey continues.
What did you want your “reimagined” take on this show to look like?
Being set in the ’90s, the absence of cell phones allowed for a nostalgic touch to the series. Drawing from our experiences in the ’70s basement hangouts, I incorporated similar dynamics into the narrative. The essence of the relationships and shared history on the sets guided me in creating a familiar yet fresh perspective for the audience.
The blend of nostalgia and new beginnings in ’90s Show is something I am incredibly proud of. I hope viewers catch the Easter eggs and feel that warmth and comfort akin to ’70s, as multi-camera sitcoms have a unique way of connecting with the audience.
This is less of an Easter egg and more an overt callback, but what was it like recreating the original opening credits in episode 6 with everyone in the car singing and dancing to the theme song?
Recreating the iconic opening sequence was a surreal and heartwarming experience. The camaraderie among the cast as we squeezed into the Vista Cruiser was truly special. The nostalgia of hearing the theme song while directing the scene brought back a flood of memories from the past.
I love how Leia is the one to place her hands on the dashboard like Donna did. Very “like mother, like daughter.”
It was a conscious decision to have Leia mirror Donna’s actions, showcasing a subtle connection between the two generations. Despite being her own person, the parallel gesture added a meaningful layer to their relationship.
What was it like filming the opening sequence back in the ’70s Show days?
The filming of the original opening credits for ’70s Show held a special charm, captured on film as we drove down Ventura Boulevard. The spontaneity and innocence of our youth while filming on the streets reflected a time of pure enjoyment, unaware of the future success the show would bring.
The genuine camaraderie we shared on and off-screen set the foundation for the show’s success. Similarly, the unity and positivity among the ’90s Show cast resonate with the spirit of the original series, creating a unique bond that translates onto the screen.
Part 3 concludes with a tense moment involving Donna, Kitty, and Red catching Leia in a compromising situation. Can you tease what might unfold next if the show returns?
As much as I am eager to see how the story progresses, I am grateful for the present moment and the opportunity to explore Donna’s journey as a mother and wife. The open-ended nature of the finale leaves room for exciting developments, should the show be renewed.
The juxtaposition of Donna’s past actions with Leia’s current choices adds an intriguing layer to the narrative. How do you think Donna navigates this shift from rebellious teen to responsible adult?
It’s fascinating to witness Donna’s evolution from a carefree teenager to a mature adult, now dealing with parenting challenges she once faced herself. The parallels between her past and present circumstances offer a compelling exploration of growth and responsibility.
Seeing Donna in a new light as a mother, wife, and director brings a sense of fulfillment and continuity to her character. The journey of self-discovery and balancing roles adds depth to her portrayal, enriching the overall narrative of ’90s Show.
