The Masterminds Behind Skeleton Crew

Jon Watts, known for his work on the Spider-Man MCU trilogy, conceived the concept for Skeleton Crew alongside his longtime collaborator Christopher Ford. Together, they curated a talented group of directors for the series, including returnees Bryce Dallas Howard and Lee Isaac Chung, Star Wars enthusiast David Lowery, genre-hopping Jake Schreier, and the Oscar-winning duo, Daniels. Watts also took the helm for two episodes himself, showcasing his versatility and vision for the project.

A Star-Studded Directors’ Roundtable

In a recent group interview conducted by Empire, the directors of Skeleton Crew gathered to discuss their love for the Star Wars franchise, their experiences working on the show, their favorite alien species, and more. While the Daniels were absent, lost in some alternate dimension, the remaining filmmakers shared insights and anecdotes from their time on set, offering fans a glimpse into the creative process behind the series.

Selection Process for the Dream Team

EMPIRE: How did you pick your directing team?

Jon Watts: Ford and I brainstormed our favorite directors and reached out to them, and to our delight, everyone we approached was on board. The opportunity to work on a Star Wars project, explore the expansive Volume, engage in pre-visualization, interact with pirates and puppets, and even hang out with Jude Law was a dream come true for all of us.

David Lowery: Jon pitched the idea of kids lost in the Star Wars universe, alongside a crew of pirates, which instantly resonated with me given my recent venture into pirate themes with a Peter Pan movie. The mention of a robot named SM-33 and the involvement of Jude Law as a lead actor further fueled my excitement, drawing parallels to my previous work with Captain Hook.

Bryce Dallas Howard: With a longstanding connection to these filmmakers, including Ford, spanning over two decades, the opportunity to collaborate on Skeleton Crew felt like a natural progression. Our shared history and mutual creative respect laid the foundation for a seamless working dynamic, enriched by our collective experiences in the industry.

Jake Schreier: Having been roommates with Jon and Ford during college, the decision to include me in the directorial lineup seemed almost inevitable. Our shared history, dating back to a collaborative sound project during our freshman year at NYU, laid the groundwork for this exciting venture into the Star Wars universe.

Lee Isaac Chung: My introduction to the project came through discussions with Jon Watts and Jon Favreau, who recognized my work on Mando. The clandestine nature of the Mandalorian set piqued my interest, and upon seeing concept art for Skeleton Crew, I was immediately drawn into a world that felt both familiar and unexplored.

Watts: Excited to collaborate with talented directors like David Lowery and Lee Isaac Chung, whose ability to connect with young actors and offer fresh perspectives on storytelling brought invaluable contributions to the series. Each director brought a unique storytelling style, enriching the Star Wars universe with innovative narratives and visual aesthetics.
